Since the first U.S. case of the new coronavirus was announced in Washington state on Jan. 21, the virus has spread through much of the country. It has prompted schools to close and cultural institutions to shut down, and has taken a heavy toll on the economy.

The Wall Street Journal's coronavirus tracker shows the number of confirmed cases in the U.S by compiling the latest data available from John Hopkins University.

The Global Outlook

Since China reported the emergence of a pneumonia-like illness in late December, the new coronavirus has spread quickly across the country, reaching nearly every province.

Within weeks it began to appear elsewhere in Asia, Europe and the U.S. Chinese authorities identified a fish and livestock market in Wuhan as the likely source of the virus.
