Dr. Seth Nielson is the founder and chief scientist of Crimson Vista, Inc., a boutique cybersecurity consulting firm. He is also an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the department of Computer Science, where he teaches classes on Network Security. Previously, he served as the Director of Advanced Research Projects at the Johns Hopkins University Institute of Security Informatics. Dr. Nielson has consulted with companies ranging from early start-ups in financial technologies to fortune-500 companies in medical devices. 

Dr. Nielson’s primary interest is in making computer security usable and understandable to anyone, regardless of their technical training and background. He is a co-founder of the Crypto Done Right project, which seeks to instruct IT professionals, developers, and managers in the correct deployment of cryptographic systems. He is also the co-author of the book “Practical Cryptography in Python”, which demonstrates practical examples of correct uses of cryptography as well as the various ways it goes wrong.

Dr. Nielson also consults for attorneys on various legal matters, and enjoys finding ways of explaining complex technical concepts to judges and juries.
