The 1,000 days from pregnancy through a child’s second birthday is the most determinative time in a child’s cognitive, socioemotional, and physical development. Too often, though, New Jersey families lack the support they need during this critical window. The First 1,000 Days Policy Coalition brings together experts, advocates, community members, and government to advance evidence-based, 2-generation policies that will improve the health and well-being of New Jersey's youngest residents, their families, and communities.
Through research and conversations with providers, parents, and experts, the Coalition identified three policy areas essential to support working families and under-resourced communities:
Child Care: Increase access to affordable, high-quality child care through public funding, systems improvements, and support for the child care workforce, among other strategies
Paid Family Leave: Increase use of paid family leave by raising awareness of the benefit, reducing administrative barriers, and promoting a culture of caregiving at the workplace
Economic Security: Increase economic security for families by introducing, expanding, or improving programs such as child tax credits, baby bonds, and public benefits
