LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The state of Indiana added early childhood education and child care credential training options as part of its workforce training programs.

Gov. Eric Holcomb announced the addition Monday, plans to open existing financial aid dollars for early childhood professions to improve the state's child care and preschool workforce.

"Child care is an important issue that has increasingly become a key workforce issue," Holcomb said in a news release. "It’s critical that parents have access to quality child care, and quality child care starts with ensuring that the professionals caring for children are well prepared and receiving the necessary tools and appropriate training that prioritizes the safety of some our youngest Hoosiers."

According to a news release, the training programs will be funded by the Workforce Ready Grant and Employer Training Grant. The grant covers tuition and fees for people trained through qualifying certificate programs.

"We are excited about the outcome this effort will have on our talent pool and the addition of certified and committed staff throughout the state," Courtney Penn, director of the Office of Early Childhood and Out-of-School Learning, said in a news release. "Birth to age five are the most critical years in a person’s life, making it imperative the child care workers we’re putting in our early learning environments are well-rounded and top notch."

The Workforce Ready Grant has helped more than 47,000 people in Indiana complete credential training in high-wage, high-demand careers, according to news release.
